Launched in May 2017, the first round of calls for wind power projects, in the framework of the licencing procedure, aimed at setting up plants with a capacity of 70 MW. None of the proposals received for wind power projects were accepted, as they were all dependent on the revision of the contract for the sale of electric energy (PPA).

On 30 May 2018, the ministry relaunched the first round of calls for wind energy projects, while increasing the overall capacity to be installed within the round to 130 MW (four projects of 30 MW and two projects of 5 MW) and by revising the standard PPA contract (decree of 30 August 2018).

The results of the round led to the selection of four projects, with a unit capacity of 30 MW, planned for sites located in the regions of Mornag (Ben Arous governorate), and Jebel Sidi Bchir, Jebel Kchabta and Batiha (all in the Bizerte governorate). Total investment in these schemes amounts to around 400 Million DT, while the proposed selling prices vary between 111 millimes and 136 millimes per kWh.

The scarcity of national natural resources along with the increase of energy demand leads Tunisia to initiate an energy transition process focusing on the increase of the share of renewable energies in the production of electricity in order to reach 12% by 2020 and 30% by 2030, in comparison to the current 3%. Indeed, the objective is to reach a renewable electric power of 3815 MW by 2030.
