As part of its four-year energy control plan for 2008-2011, the Tunisian government decided to launch a program to promote the use of photovoltaic solar energy for Water Electrification and Pumping. This program, called PRO VOLT, consists of three projects, namely:

  • POMPAGE PV which concerns the pumping of water for irrigation in agricultural farms.
  • Elec Farms, it concerns the electrification of agricultural farms and small projects in rural areas.
  • Bât Sol which concerns the use of photovoltaic solar energy to partially cover the electricity requirements of buildings connected to the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company network.

The PRO VOLT program benefits from financial incentives granted in the framework of actions funded by the National Energy Control Fund

The scarcity of national natural resources along with the increase of energy demand leads Tunisia to initiate an energy transition process focusing on the increase of the share of renewable energies in the production of electricity in order to reach 12% by 2020 and 30% by 2030, in comparison to the current 3%. Indeed, the objective is to reach a renewable electric power of 3815 MW by 2030.
