The Tunisian-Norwegian cooperation project "Solar Fuelled Electric Mobility" (SoFEM), conducted in partnership with the Norwegian laboratory SINTEF ENERGY, won at the award ceremony on 14 December 2016 in New York, the prize of the best project 2016 within the program UN-DESA ENERGY GRANT "POWERING THE FUTURE WE WANT".
This project aims to promote solar-powered maritime electric mobility in the MENA region and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport. It consists of a pilot project to convert the diesel engine of a boat or of a photovoltaic solar powered electric motorized tank for demonstration purposes as well as the collection of data on the feasibility of maritime electrical mobility.
The components of the project:
- Pre-feasibility study for the choice of boat or ferry.
- Technical feasibility studies, design of the installation, acquisition of equipment and implementation of the pilot project.
- Organization of workshops for Tunisian decision-makers in the urban, transport and energy sectors.
- Detailed social, economic and financial studies to assess the feasibility of this mode of transport in the region, including its potential for replication.
- Awareness of Tunisian stakeholders and the general public on the costs and benefits of public transport solutions based on renewable energy in the region.
