Mr. Fathi Hanchi, General Director of the National Agency for Energy Control, participated on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at the headquarters of Zitouna Bank, in the signing ceremony of a financing agreement for the solar water heating program in the residential sector (PROSOL) and the electricity production program through photovoltaic systems connected to the low-voltage grid (PROSOL ELEC) for the period 2024-2026, with a total loan amount estimated at 370 million dinars between Zitouna Bank and the Tunisian company of electricity and gas.

This agreement is part of the renewal of the financing mechanism for these two programs. The PROSOL ELEC program has enabled the installation of approximately 300 megawatts of photovoltaic systems for the benefit of 90,000 families, while the PROSOL water heating program has enabled the installation of more than 400,000 water heaters. As part of its commitment to the national energy transition, the National Agency for Energy Control, in coordination with its partners, the Tunisian company of electricity and gas and  Zitouna Bank, is overseeing the implementation of these programs to achieve the objectives set within the framework of the national energy transition strategy.

The aforementioned financing mechanism is considered a key factor for the success of these programs, as it is based on providing financial assistance to Tunisian families, in the form of grants awarded by the Energy Transition Fund, supervised by the National Agency for Energy Control, and loans granted by the banking institution.

The scarcity of national natural resources along with the increase of energy demand leads Tunisia to initiate an energy transition process focusing on the increase of the share of renewable energies in the production of electricity in order to reach 12% by 2020 and 30% by 2030, in comparison to the current 3%. Indeed, the objective is to reach a renewable electric power of 3815 MW by 2030.
